What Happens if You Miss The FAFSA Deadline? | SoFi

Even if a school’s #FAFSA deadline passes, students could still be eligible for #FinancialAid! Watch this video to get tips on what you can do. It is never too late to apply for federal financial aid although there are specific deadlines that are on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) website. Specific schools and states may have different deadlines so it is important to check those out. Make contact with one or more schools you are interested in applying to and let them know that you’ve missed the deadline. They will typically tell you to go ahead and file that application regardless. There are certain types of financial aid that you could be eligible for through the FAFSA that no matter when you file you may still be able to get that money. For example, the Federal Pell Grant is an entitlement program, so even if you missed a specific school’s deadline for filing the FAFSA you could still be eligible for a Pell Grant at any school you apply to as long as you get that FAFSA filed during the award year. After you have submitted the FAFSA, you’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) which summarizes the data and information you just submitted. The SAR will not tell you how much financial aid you will receive; the school you are enrolled in or have been accepted to will send you an electronic or paper financial aid offer that will give you a breakdown of the aid you are eligible for.
