Meet Cooper: a cancer survivor and avid Destiny gamer who we had the privilege of welcoming to the Bungie studio as part of The Bungie Foundation's partnership with Make-A-Wish earlier this year. Cooper got to tour the studio, connect with developers on what they are working on for the future of Destiny and even step in our motion capture studio to portray his favorite in-game character. Cooper is an inspiration to us all and a reminder of the power that we have as a collective gaming community to make the world a better place.

TINA CHAN (she/her) User Researcher on Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft Montreal

Authenticity workshops (AWs) leverage consultants with topic-specific expertise or lived experiences to improve the realism and sensitivity of designs that represent under-represented identities in gaming. Examples include developing characters who are living with disabilities, from indigenous communities, or who are not cis gender. While strategic AWs facilitate genuine co-creation of characters with communities they represent, and present opportunities for cultural leadership, AWs can also build Games UXR influence into the pipelines of atypical partners like Art, Narrative, and Marketing. This talk walks through methods and learnings from designing three playable characters for Rainbow Six Siege (an operator with prosthetics, an indigenous pilot, and a trans woman engineer) at Ubisoft Montreal, and then finalizes with a toolkit to conduct AWs.

After this talk, the audience should be able to 1) Identify where Games UXR methods can improve the authenticity of game content; 2) Articulate the importance of authenticity to production teams with historical examples in the games industry; and 3) Leave with a toolkit to start running AWs

The pandemic fundamentally changed our world, and in this time so many of us came together digitally through multiplayer games, which need to be tested! One of the biggest parts of their playtesting is getting people into a room together, which as we know, was a bit difficult over the last few years. This talk explains how multiplayer mobile testing changed. All from my time running playtests with hundreds of players from my cozy apartment in Berlin. Including a range of stories from the endeavors and ingenuity of our team to the player who wanted to do a moderated session in their car! Working with studios to change tack from running smaller studies to larger ones, testing games “out in the wild” earlier and doing it all while we were asleep was a challenge that everyone wanted to tackle head on. We will lift the lid on techniques that worked, ones that failed and maybe even a few backup ones we have not gotten to try just yet.

Autistic people are increasingly becoming the focus of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) games and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. It is recognised that many autistic children have a natural affinity for modern technology use; this provides a solid basis for learning through the use of digital systems - specifically as interventions for “social deficits”.   

Despite this rise in popularity, there are concerns within research regarding the true impacts of these systems on the children, and the degree of user involvement in the formulation and evaluation stages of development.   

Has the evolution of disability culture outpaced the design of these ‘educational’ games? How can we build tools that acknowledge the agency of autistic children?

Born with a rare genetic disorder, Cristian spent much of his childhood in and out of the hospital. After receiving a kidney transplant, Cristian’s road to recovery was long and arduous. He made it through with the help of his dog, Artemis, and the Destiny community.
