PlayStation Offers Limited Console and Special Events for 30th Anniversary

On December 3, 1994, Sony launched its first-ever gaming console, the PlayStation, in Japan. An immediate worldwide hit that spawned several notable successors, including the even more successful PlayStation 2, this console catapulted Sony into becoming a juggernaut in the world of console gaming. To celebrate the PlayStation’s success and everything that has followed, Sony is celebrating the console’s 30th birthday by giving back to the fans who made it all possible.

This celebration kicked off with a tribute video on PlayStation’s YouTube channel titled: “30th Anniversary | Thank You”. The video features numerous familiar PlayStation characters and franchises, including The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, and Bloodborne. The iconic imagery and familiar PlayStation slogans make the video feel like a nostalgic trip down memory lane. With the backing track being “Dreams” by The Cranberries, the short and sweet tribute is an emotional thank you to the fans who have helped bring all of these gaming worlds to life for so many years.

The 30th-anniversary page on the PlayStation website contains numerous new features for enthusiasts and casual fans alike. Those who are more familiar with the history of Sony and PlayStation may feel inclined to take their multiple-choice 30th-anniversary quiz. The questions ask about gaming knowledge across several console generations and are a nice treat for fans who are familiar with the PlayStation’s history and would like to prove their knowledge.

If you want to study up or are just curious about the history of the PlayStation, there is also a well-put-together timeline available on the website that gives specs, significant games, and a general history of every PlayStation console. Even the portables are featured in this comprehensive history. For those who fell in love with the music of their favorite franchises, PlayStation is also offering several digital soundtracks, including the scores of God of War, Twisted Metal, and Starhawk. A specially curated PlayStation 30th-anniversary playlist is also available on Spotify as an added bonus.

In addition to all of these online features, PlayStation also announced its 30th anniversary collection of PlayStation 5 Pro consoles. This limited series features a new gray PlayStation 5 Pro console, a gray Dualsense wireless controller, and even a gray PlayStation Portal remote player. As all of this hardware is adorned with the iconic original shade of PlayStation gray, the limited bundle is a collector’s dream. And for those who aren’t interested in the consoles, there are also retro PlayStation themes available for PS5 owners to get their nostalgia fix. Phone and computer wallpapers with classic PlayStation themes are also available for download.
